- Announcing the Third Annual Summer Institute at the Wells Book Arts
For its third annual summer institute, the Wells Book Arts Center is
offering an extraordinary opportunity to learn from some of the
nation's most important figures in the book arts. Intensive, hands-on
courses in letterpress printing, bookbinding and lettering arts are
taught by remarkable instructors in Wells' historic setting of lyric
beauty. There will be three sessions for the summer of 2007.
Session I: July 814 An Introduction to Book Arts and Modern
Publishing is a foray into book arts and modern publishing that in a
single course offers workshops, tours, and lectures given by a lively
and varied panel of experts including Mark Dimunation, Chief of the
Rare Book and Special Collections Division, Library of Congress;
Brenda Marsh, Vice President of Author Relations at Barnes & Noble;
and David Kirk, author & illustrator of the popular Miss Spider
children's book series.
Session II, July 1521, features three separate courses. Printer and
book artist Macy Chadwick's Printing In Layers: Intuition, Innovation
and Accident in the Artist's Book; fine binder & book designer Don
Glaister's Putting the Art Back in the Craft; and lettering artist
Suzanne Moore's Equilibrium: Creating Text & Image Balance in the
Session III, July 2228, also features three separate courses. Printer
and book artist Barbara Tetenbaum's Limited Edition Books:
Experimental Image-making on the Vandercook; painter, printmaker and
bookbinder Laura Wait's Artist's Books: More Than Paper, Wood and
Leather; and font designer Leslie Cabarga's Creating Logos, Type and
Lettering form Scratch.
Students may select one course of the three offered in a session and
all levels of experience, from beginners to experts, are welcome.
Courses are limited to 812 participants who will enjoy well-equipped
& air-conditioned studios on the Wells College campus, air-conditioned
dorm rooms, and ample time to exchange ideas and enjoy camaraderie
with fellow book artists.
