House Industries has recently released John Downer's Paperback which was in beta for quite some long time and occasionally seen tested in commercial ads. House has put out a very impressive 20-page type specimen of the face which can likely be requested at their site.

The face consists of 3 size optimized masters for text settings and 3 size optimized masters for display. The character sets are quite large and include some very nice decorative embellishments as well as several paired cap combinations.

Paperback is optimized for legibility and is more a workhorse face like Matthew Carter's Miller or Monotype Plantin (there aren't many of these around). The roman and italic have a very similar color in body. The settings, especially those at small text size, look quite good (the letterforms look like they would be free from ink bridging problems). The display, when seen at very large size, reveals an odd and somewhat crude faceting to several junctures of the outline. I suspect this is not just a stylistic treatment but that it has something to do with functionality¬óthough if they are some kind of ink trap they seem at cross-purposes (at least if used in letterpress applications).

A bit heavy in weight but it could be thinned and likely perform well. Take a look.
