INTRODUCTION TO LETTERPRESS PRINTING
To paraphrase A. J. Liebling, the freedom of the press belongs to those who can operate one. Learn letterpress printing while creating a small chapbook, postcard series or other form of ephemera. These classes will cover the basics of letterpress—setting metal type and printing on a Vandercook cylinder press, making choices of paper for letterpress, proper cleanup—and will explore the world of elegant printed objects.
Peter Fraterdeus is a typographer, type designer and printer who has been working with letterpress since 7th grade at Nichols Junior High School in Evanston, Illinois. Peter launched back into letterpress at the end of 2007 after a 15 year hiatus, finding space in the up and coming historic Millwork Warehouse district along Dubuque, Iowa's Mississippi riverfront. He received two National Endowment for the Arts design grants in calligraphy and type design in the 1980s and taught for a decade at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
