Group Description

Cheap oil is now a thing of the past. The world is entering a new era of shrinking energy resources and heightened competition for remaining supplies. The peak of global oil production will have profound consequences for us all.

Following upon Richard Heinberg's October 2005 talk in Oneonta, the Coalition for Democracy of Central New York established this group to discuss local strategies in Central New York State for dealing with the world historical event of Peak Oil.

Topics may include the rebuilding of local economies and community solidarity, encouraging and participating in local food production, reordering educational priorities, assessing energy needs, developing conservation strategies, exploring alternative energy resources, setting goals and tasks for energy descent, and the like - all aimed at the practical task of arriving at sustainable communities in the absence of cheap and abundant fossil fuels.

The group is no longer moderated. Posters are asked please to restrict messages to the above and related topics. Discussions of political matters and the facts of peak oil are available on other lists.
