Navy Secretary Ray Mabus is expected to announce that the last of the 14 Lewis and Clark-class cargo ships Cesar Chavez, in memory and honor of the late farmworker activist. He will be visiting the facilities of General Dynamic NASSCO, where the ship is being built, in San Diego's mostly Latino neighborhood, Barrio Logan.

William McLean was christened by Margaret Taylor, the eldest niece of Dr. William McLean, the U.S. Navy physicist who conceived and developed the heat-seeking Sidewinder missile.

Full Associated Press report of the naming of T-AKE 14 May 18 along with five photographs.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus on Wednesday said it was an honor to name the last of 14 Lewis and Clark-class cargo ships after the late farm worker activist Cesar Chavez — pointing out that the vessels recognize American pioneers and visionaries who changed the country and the world for the better.

Also to his credit, Cesar Chavez served in the US Navy during World War II.
