The two receiving
Merchant Marine Reserve commissions are headed to Norfolk Virginia for Military
Sealift Command orientation and training then on to some time at sea aboard a
MSC ship. Third Engineer I believe.
There was a break
between the commissioning and the awards ceremony. That afternoon was the
graduation of the senior class. The principal address at the graduation was by
our friend Carl Nolte, Reporter and Columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle
and President, National Liberty Ship Memorial SS. JEREMIAH O'BRIEN. Vice Admiral
Manson Brown, USCG, Commander, Pacific Area, and Commander, Coast Guard Defense
Force West, gave the USCG licencing oath at the graduation.
Three Navy League councils presented
awards, Placer County, San Francisco, and Vallejo. A host of other
awards are presented by maritime organizations and businesses, service clubs,
the Academy, and individuals.
