Hornblower Cruises into Old Town Sacramento

June 5th Phelps and Teddy Hobart were aboard the inaugural cruise of the first of two Hornblower Yachts to call Old Sacramento homeport. On behalf of the Navy League they greeted the captain and his staff as well as a number of personnel from the San Francisco operation up for the occasion.

The Capitol Hornblower is docked aft of the Delta King. The ticket booth is adjacent to the Rio Cafe. Tickets for the one hour excursion cruise are $20, $18 for seniors. Departure times are 1300 and 1500 Thursday through Monday initially but an expanded schedule is planned including dinner, brunch, and private charters. The dock and vessels are handicap accessible.

The narrated cruise initially proceeds north up the Sacramento River. Sights along the way are pointed out. At Captain Jim West's Sea Scout PTF-26 Liberty docked just north of the Virgin Sturgeon Restaurant, she turns around and proceeds south. Past Tower Bridge she circles back and returns to the city dock. A good hour on the river!

Also sharing the city dock is a lone sea lion basking in the sun.  Huge! Did you know it has vestiges of toe nails on its rear flippers? Nearby a turtle was perched on wedged-in piece of driftwood.

In Old Town be sure to walk south across Capitol Avenue to examine the Maritime Monument with its anchor and flags. The bell of USS SACRAMENTO, PG-19, and the plaque presented by the Navy League are there. Proceeding south on the attractive promenade are photographs and text related to Sacramento's colorful maritime history.

New tour boat service starts today in Old Sacramento

The new company running tour boats out of Old Sacramento is scheduled to begin its service today.

Hornblower Cruises & Events said it would launch the hourlong narrated cruises from the L Street dock at 1 and 3 p.m. Thursdays through Mondays.

Passengers will ride aboard the M/V Capitol Hornblower, a 300-passenger, 90-foot-long vessel with an enclosed main deck, covered top deck and snack bar.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors 55 and older and military personnel, and $10 for children 4 to 12.

The city entered into a short-term contract with Hornblower last month. A 10-year contract with the former tour group, Sacramento Yacht Charters, had been cut after two years because city officials said the company didn't run a reliable schedule and fell short of revenue projections.
