The June, 2009 issue of CURRENTS is now posted on the Cal Maritime website via a hotlink from the homepage (www.csum.edu) or directly at:  http://www.csum.edu/documents/CURRENTSJUN09.pdf

      In this issue:

2009 Commencement – 157 cadets walked across the stage to receive their diplomas at the 2009 Commencement ceremonies.  Adm. Robert Kramek, former head of the U.S. Coast Guard was the keynote speaker and recipient of an Honorary Degree for his contributions to the maritime community.

2009 Training Voyage – Training Ship Golden Bear set sail the morning after Commencement for her 2009 training voyage.  The first day saw an intense series of training exercises and drills on the waters of San Francisco Bay, including visits to the ports of Richmond, Oakland and San Francisco.  This year’s voyage will make calls on the West Coast of the Americas.

Cal Maritime’s 80th Anniversary:  June of 1929 was the date legislation was signed creating the California Nautical School, today’s California Maritime Academy.

Studying Caspian Terns:  A fascinating research study into the lives of these interesting birds is taking place on the waters of San Francisco Bay, aided in part by new technology installed on the Cal Maritime Pier.

Legislative Aides Visit Campus:  Representatives from the offices of Congressman George Miller and state legislators Noreen Evans and Patricia Wiggins visited campus recently to see the new Simulation Center and learn more about maritime piracy issues.

That and more in this latest issue, including the campus calendar.
