      Interested in helping with airplanes, restoration, security, tours, events, or admin assistance? Orientation is held the first Saturdays each month, 9:30-11:30am. Sign up in advance: (510) 521-8448 x268.

      Saturday, May 16, 2009 – Flashlight Tour
      Take a behind-the-scenes tour and beat the crowds as you explore areas onboard HORNET that have not yet been opened to the public. The three-hour guided tour begins at 8:30am and costs $35 per person ($30 for members). Reservations: (510) 521-8448 x 282

      Saturday, May 16, 2009 – Living Ship Day: Armed Forces Day
      See the aircraft carrier in action! Witness simulated flight operations as aircraft are lifted to the flight deck and placed into launch position; participate in mission briefings; meet former crew; sit in the cockpit of a fighter jet!

      In recognition of their service to our country, current military personnel and their families receive free admission to the museum on this day.

      May 22-25, 2009 – Ancient Mariners Regatta
      The USS Hornet Museum hosts the 57th Annual Ancient Mariner Regatta, the largest Sea Scout Regatta in the United States. Watch as Sea Scouts from across the nation gather to compete in fun and challenging tests of skill including whaleboat races, sailing, knot tying, rope handling, and seamanship..       Veterans of past and present wars will be honored during a special Memorial Day service at 1:00pm.

      July 24-26, 2009 – Splashdown 2009: 40th Anniversary of Apollo 11
      Celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first humans to walk on the moon. The whole family will enjoy learning more about the U.S. space program aboard the aircraft carrier USS HORNET -- the recovery ship for Apollo 11 and Apollo 12. Meet astronauts and other key individuals who participated in America's greatest technological achievement of the 20th century. There will be numerous educational activities and educational exhibits, some reflecting that 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy.

      July 25, 2009 – Booksigning: Buzz Aldrin
      Meet the second man to walk on the moon! Buzz Aldrin will be onboard as our featured speaker for Splashdown 2009. The USS Hornet will serve as the platform for the West Coast release of Buzz Aldrin’s newest book, "Magnificent Desolation". Purchase his book in advance and have it autographed.

      On-Going Every Sunday – Protestant Divine Services
      Hornet Chaplain John Berger conducts church services at 11:00am in the ship's Chapel. All hands and guests are welcome. Free admission to the museum is granted for church attendees.
