      Simply a "Heads Up" that our council's website has been submitted for a new Navy League award - the Website Mackie Award. Here is the message. Not submitted but of possible interest is the criteria found at the bottom of the message.

      The Pacific Merchant Marine Council received its charter December 11, 2006. The website was online December 22, 2006. Initially the website consisted of the informative home page complemented by calendared events/activities and an extensive links page. Subsequently messages and photographs were posted.       New Pacific Merchant Marine Council established in San Francisco National President John Panneton inaugurated the Pacific Merchant Marine Council. 
       
      Yahoo group websites are ideal for small councils or councils without skilled webmasters. The range of features is extensive and there is no financial expense to establish or maintain it. We believe http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PMMC-NLUS sets the standard for other councils to emulate if this criteria is important.

      Navy League Awards: Mackie Awards add Website Category; submission deadline extended to June 30

      The Donald M. Mackie Award was established in 1964 for the best Navy League newsletter to encourage more effective communications between Navy Leaguers. The award is named after Donald M. Mackie, who was instrumental in establishing Seapower magazine, then called "Navy - The Magazine of Sea Power." This year a website category has been added to the competition and the deadline for submission has been extended until June 30, 2007.

      The awards are presented annually at the National Convention to the newsletters and website judged to be the best for the last calendar year. Judges are selected on the basis of their expertise in the field of newsletters, web and print publishing, or a related field.

      Follow the directions below and send all submissions to Director of Public Relations, Navy League of the United States, 2300 Wilson Boulevard, Suite 200, Arlington, VA 22201-3308.

      Categories

      The categories for the websites will be the same as the newsletters: separate categories for region, state, and council websites. Council websites are further divided into small (up to 125 members), medium (126 - 499 members) and large (500+ members). There is a winner and a runner-up chosen for each category. Websites are judged on the basis of how well the webmaster works with available resources. The overall appearance of a website is a significant factor, but equally important elements are compelling content, clearly defined goals and easy navigation. A good web site puts the needs of its users first.

      Criteria: Entries will be judged on the following seven criteria:

      • Design
      • Innovation
      • Content
      • Technology
      • Interactivity
      • Copywriting
      • Ease of use to target audience

      What makes your website a good Mackie contender?

      • Credible, original content relevant to the local council, local sea service activities and regional or national Navy League goals and activities
      • Be interactive; good interactivity engages the user and makes your site memorable
      • Clearly defined goals
      • Easy to read
      • Be well-organized
      • Easy to navigate
      • Valuable, timely information to the user, not lots of data
      • Consistent design throughout
      • Offers quality, compelling content
      • Visually attractive
      • Proper use spelling and grammar
      • Loads quickly
      • Uses special effects only if they add value
      • Have working links
      • Builds user loyalty; custom-tailor the information to user preferences
      • There's some way to contact the people responsible for the site; usually an e-mail address or phone number and street address
