2008 California Maritime Transportation Advocacy Event, Sacramento,
- Members and Friends,
May is California Maritime Transportation Month and May 22nd is Maritime
Day. For the Pacific Merchant Marine Council, NLUS, both are important. We
start our council's state legislative advocacy activities this week. Here is
an outline of what will take place. Some things are simply spontaneous like
lunch with associates.
* Tuesday, April 29th, there are various meetings and association dinners
* Wednesday, April 30th, the morning starts with briefings and during the
afternoon those participating will be visiting with state legislators then
regroup for debriefing. The fun starts at 1800 in the Capitol Rotunda
basement with a reception celebrating the start of California Maritime
Transportation Month and honoring Captain Manny Aschemeyer, retiring
executive director of the Southern California Marine Exchange.
* Thursday, May 1st, starts with legislative proclamation presentations.
That is followed by the California Marine and Intermodal Transportation
System Advisory Council (CALMITSAC) meeting.
I, as chairman of our Legislative Affairs Committee, will be attending the
activities, interacting with legislators, members of their staff, and simply
networking with participants. If you care to come on board for one or more
of these days - if only one day Wednesday - as a Navy League representative,
please let me know. If you need NLUS business cards I can prepare them. Also
please register following the guidelines below sent to us by Norman

There is still time to register for the 2008 Maritime Transportation
Advocacy Event. We hope you are planning on being this Wednesday and
Thursday. We want this industry's voice to be heard and understood. See
the attached for the schedule, location of events and a reservation form.
It's a good time to network, so submit those reservation forms so that
badges are made for you. It's an important opportunity to reach out to your
own legislative people. It's a great time to show that 1 in 7 California
voters work in this industry and that the maritime and goods movement
industries have enormous challenges. We require their "partnership" along
with the Administration to advance our goals on the federal level to benefit
our statewide international trade network.
Why not think about bringing others along with you? The Wednesday and
Thursday events/meetings are FREE. A wealth of information is going to be
exchanged. We are most fortunate to be hearing from state leaders on
important topics such as the Trade Corridors Improvement Fund (TCIF) funding
process; what the state is planning in order to gain an appropriate piece of
federal transportation dollars during the funding process in 2009. Glenn
Pascall, a founder of the West Coast Corridor Coalition, will moderate both
briefing seminars. The goal is to engage with all of the participants in
discussions and conversations which will address the issues important to
you. Ken DeCrescenzo, Caltrans Federal Liaison, John Barna, Executive
Director of the California Transportation Commission (CTF) and Tom Messer,
Caltran's "rail person" are among those participating in these two briefing
You might want to call your legislators, inviting them to join you at our
reception from 5:30-7:30 P.M. You can comfortably tell the members that
meeting the leadership of this industry can only be helpful in creating a
conversation with 1 in 7 California voters.
Call me, 916-651-1893, if you have any questions.
