Fw: [PCR-NLUS] San Francisco Navy League Luncheon Tuesday 13 September 11:45 am Scoma's Restaurant Pier 47 [1 Attachment]
- Ahoy Members and Friends,Not my style to send out a council luncheon invitation less than two days before the event but nevertheless if you would like to see what the San Francisco Council is doing this is a great opportunity. Treasurer Roger Bazeley previously indicated he would be going and I expect Stan Ellexson and possibly Robert Dickinson will be attending. Both have served as San Francisco Council President and are now members of both councils. Others of us will be attending the Propeller Club luncheon at Scotts the same time.Adopting an aircraft carrier is taking on a BIG obligation. When the Santa Barbara Council adopted the USS RONALD REAGAN (CVN-76) it initially raised over $1 million for the commissioning and support. Support comes along as an obligation with adoption and that in the case of a big ship can be tens of thousands of dollars. The Pacific Merchant Marine Council has adopted two ships: the National Liberty Ship Memorial SS JEREMIAH O'BRIEN and the SS UNITED STATES. We don't do justice to either financially as a council; ditto for the sponsored and supported (not adopted) Arkansas Division Sea Cadets. Some councils are financially endowed (I know of two with an endowment over $1million) - to date this council is not. And we don't have "voluntary" local dues. Currently the council treasury has about $500 in it and that's it! There are a few minor physical assets maybe worth less than $200. By the way, NLUS headquarters has not sent us a membership dues rebate check for the second quarter of this year; it was due July 15 (we get less than $4 per life member and $10 per regular member. Please be assured the council will never experience deficit financing as long as I am president. We will simply do what we can with what we have.Thank you for being a member of the Pacific Merchant Marine Council; the council is special and you are special! Talk to me anytime if you think we should be doing something we are not currently. Right now a priority is more new members. All the best - Heave Ho,PhelpsPhelps Hobart, PresidentPacific Merchant Marine Council, NLUS(916) 739-6949___________________________________----- Original Message -----From: Angus BlackwoodSent: Sunday, September 11, 2011 8:37 PMSubject: [PCR-NLUS] San Francisco Navy League Luncheon Tuesday 13 September 11:45 am Scoma's Restaurant Pier 47 [1 Attachment]
