Ahoy Members and Friends,We are very fortunate to have Gil, Karen and the Freitas family associated with our council.Karen is our council's Vice President - Youth Activities. Gil and son Sea Cadet Chief Davis are council Directors. Karen is an Instructor in the Arkansas Division Sea Cadets and husband Gil is the unit's Executive Officer.Gil is employed by Ports America at the Port of Oakland maintaining the cranes. He was expecting on Monday the three giant cranes that actually arrived Tuesday. Due to the delay he was able to attend the luncheon. His wife Karen and daughter Sea Cadet Kaitlynne Freitas were also there. As previously mentioned, she announced our council's Drum Roll for Toys for Tots. By the time the luncheon was over, the collection offering toy drum had $120 in donations within it! And the decorated laundry basket had a half dozen unwrapped gifts. Thanks everyone who contributed. `Karen again brought her violin and Kaitlynne accompanied on the harp. We thank them for the musical interlude during the luncheon. Thanks Gil for the toast to the Sea Cadets.Anticipate the council's Toys for Tots toy drum and decorated laundry basket at each of or next three luncheon meetings. Thanks Freitas family members. We will definitely exceed our 2009 council offering.Below is a message from Karen I want to share with you. Also the announcement of the Toy's for Tots Literacy Program.PhelpsPS The Arkansas Division is prepared and ready for the unit's annual inspection this coming Saturday, March 20. I will be attending morning activities before heading over to the USS HORNET for its open house and Navy League salute. Hope to see you aboard that afternoon; be sure to have your NLUS membership card, lapel pin and stop by the NLUS table aboard.____________ _________ _________ _________ _________ ____From: Karen Lynne FreitasTo: Phelps HobartSent: Tuesday, March 16, 2010Subject: Toys for TotsDear Phelps,
I was really pleased with the support from the members at Monday's meetings. I do hope that you will express my appreciation to them. We are 1/3rd of the way there. By the time we have our December meeting we should make our goal of $300.00. I don't want to be pushy in anyway. I know everyone is always being hit up for this or that. It was very heart warming to see their generosity.
If we do a little every month then it will not be such a push at the last minute. If we can encourage each member to bring an unwrapped gift that would also be helpful. We plan on giving all the toys and monetary donation to the Alameda Toys for Tots up to our goal amount. If we go over then we will be able to split everything between Alameda (East Bay) and San Bruno (which is South Bay) location.
So appreciative of your efforts to make our meetings interesting for us as members. Here's to another successful meeting!Sincerely,
INST Karen Freitas
P.S. Thanks for allowing me to speak and to play my violin.____________ _________ _________ _________ _________ __----- Original Message -----From: Marine Toys for TotsTo: pmmc@...Sent: Wednesday, March 17, 2010 8:41 AMSubject: Toys for Tots eNewsletter - March 2010
Dear Pacific Merchant Marine Council Members,
You support the Marine Toys for Tots Program because you want to help less fortunate children, so I'm hoping you'll be happy to learn about another opportunity to do just that...
National March Into Literacy Month!
Celebrate the second anniversary of the Marine Toys for Tots Literacy Program, along with exclusive sponsors, The UPS Store and Mail Boxes Etc., as we help these children discover the joy of reading. Every $1 donated to the Toys for Tots Literacy Program helps place a book into the hands of a less fortunate child. And with every book comes the opportunity to develop the language and reading skills essential to future learning!
Sadly, fewer than half of young children in America are read to daily, and 35 percent of our nation's children arrive at kindergarten without the basic language skills they need to learn to read.
To help us raise awareness of literacy, please forward this email to your friends and post this message to your Facebook and Twitter pages: "Don't forget! It is National March Into Literacy Month. Click here to give the gift of reading to children in need and learn more about the Toys for Tots Literacy Program. Every dollar counts!"
Thank you, Phelps, for making a difference to children not only at Christmas, but all year long.
William J. Grein
Major, USMC (Ret.) Vice President
Marine Toys for Tots Foundation
PS.With help from friends like you, 3.1 million books were distributed to less fortunate children in 2009. For as little as a dollar, you can help put a beautiful book into a child's hands. Anyone and everyone can make a difference!
Toys for Tots Literacy Program Wins Award
PR News' 2009 PR Award for the "Best Community Relations Campaign" went to the Toys for Tots Literacy Program. The campaign was recognized for its commitment to social responsibility and helping to raise awareness of children's illiteracy.. . Read the press release here.
"March into Literacy" and celebrate the two-year anniversary of the Toys for Tots Literacy Program. Every $1 donation helps purchase a book for a less fortunate child.
Thanks to its franchisees, associates and customers, The UPS Store and Mail Boxes Etc. network has raised more than $1 million!
Aspire Public Schools say thank you for the gift of 600 books. These books enabled new programs to help children become better readers.
