Ahoy Members and Friends,
Again not much to do with the Merchant Marine but if you have an interest in news for Veterans, there should be a few items of note below.
Ahead we have National Maritime Day and Memorial Day. An internet search provides plenty of information on both days.
Keep in touch.

There is some interesting veterans news in CalVet’s April Newsletter.
For me there is the Secretary’s semi-annual conference May 2nd. I’ll be representing the Pacific Central Region as before.
See the newsletter for information on changes at the Veterans’ Home in Yountville. This year marks its 130th anniversary! More at http://www.facebook.com/VHCYountville.
A new Veterans Cemetery is in the planning stage on the grounds of what was Fort Ord, Monterey County. Additional information may be found at http://ccveteranscemetery.org. Cemetery construction is scheduled to go to bid in November 2014, and construction is scheduled for completion in January 2016.
A good place to start for inquiries related to veteran services is to contact your county veterans service office. To find the office nearest you, go to www.cacvso.org. Click on Contact Us and then click on your county of residence. Another option is to simply dial 211. It’s an easy-to-remember telephone number that connects people with essential human services—2-1-1. Besides veteran-specific services, callers are looking for training, employment, food pantries, help for an aging parent, addiction prevention programs for teenage children, affordable housing, support groups and other important programs.
For extensive federal veterans information see http://www.va.gov; the President proposes the department’s budget next fiscal year should increase to $164 billion, http://www.va.gov/opa/pressrel/pressrelease.cfm?id=2528. For state veteran information see http://www.calvet.ca.gov.
There’s information on the California Veterans license plates. You can get one with the Navy League logo as well as a host of armed forces and veteran organizations. See https://www.calvet.ca.gov/VetServices/Pages/License-Plates.aspx.
