      Calling all vets and historians...

The follow on to the PBY-5/-5A team was the PBN / PB2B-2/PBY-6A models.  At present my data shows only one USN squadron using a PBY-6A in early 1946.  That's surely incomplete.

Question: Did any USN squadrons in the Pacific theater, for ops or training, receive PBN / PB2B-2/PBY-6A Catalinas... prior to the end of the war in September 1945?  Thereafter?  If so, which ones.

I'm trying to get a grip here, but it's a big sandwich!

      Cheers, Lou

        question. Did Fly 3/13/45 PB2B2 Bu # 44242 1.2 hrs flite designated E ?
at VPB 100 Kaneohe while Training enroute to VPB 23. I have my Buddy
Leroy Pentons log as mine burned. I left Sqdn to go home Via Pelieu
Hdqrtrs to Guam to await ship home for 3 weeks but did fly 1 6a as
remember Collins Xmitter but no log. After I left in Oct. 45 Leroy lists
5 flights in 46680 PBY 6a at Iwo Jima and one in 63994 and in Nov. 45
One flight in ??028 Guam to Saipan. The plane we flew out from Kaneohe
sister to Heijo,s 46633 they turned over to unknown Sqdn in Saipan and
believe it was destroyed there but cant confirm. Hope of some help.

Funny story about Korea - depending on where you sat!

CV47 left SD 5 Jul 50 for Korea. A bunch of short-timers on the pier giving us the standard razz: "You'll be sorrrry!" Their hitches were up, or almost. A few days later, in the 1950 version of 'stop-loss,' they were all extended involuntarily. Most of them ended up on BOXER, which came out a few months later. Then it was our turn!

Incidentally, BuPers did something clever about that time. They offered inactive reservists a one-year tour if they would volunteer, promising discharge at the end of the year. We got some good people aboard out of that - mostly men going to college on the GI Bill who felt they could spare a ydear but no more. The Navy kept its word, so when we came back in May 1951 they were let go in time for the next academic year.
