This bill would broaden eligibility under Section 504 (affecting students with disabilities) as well as the ADA (employment), so families might want to participate and ask questions. Please feel free to share this email with others who may be interested.
This is courtesy of COPAA (Council of Parent Attorneys & Advocates: http://www.copaa.org ):
As you know, Congress is considering legislation to override Supreme Court decisions that made it very difficult for many people with disabilities to qualify for the ADA's protections.  The House bill would also apply these protections to Section 504 cases, and COPAA is strongly urging the Senate to do the same.  This is important; no child should have the door to 504 shut because of old, outdated ADA case law that is being overturned in the employment sector.

The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights is sponsoring a special conference call,
"Restoring the 'Emancipation Proclamation' for People with Disabilities: The ADA Amendments Act." Speakers include Senator Harkin and Andy Imparato, Chair of the American Association of People with Disabilities.  The telephone conference will be on Thursday, July 31, 2008 at 11:00 am (EDT).  The call is designed to build grassroots support for the ADA override bill and to inform members of the civil rights and disabilities communities.  The call, however, is open to the public and anyone may participate--not just civil rights/disability activists.

I expect the call to mostly focus on the ADA rather than 504 because the ADA is the main focus of the bill.  The bill began as the ADA Restoration Act and now is called the ADA Amendments Act.

Here is the link to register for the call:

The registration form asks for your organization, but it is okay to simply type "parent" or "person with disability" or something else similar.  You do not need to be with an organization to participate. Once you register, you can submit a question for the speakers.
