ATHENS - The Greek Orthodox Church said Friday it
has launched an internal investigation into its
humanitarian branch, Solidarity, amid reports
that millions of euros from the NGO's coffers have gone missing.
The Greek foreign ministry is asking to be
reimbursed $8.6 million that Solidarity received
for a program it never ran, Father Timotheos, a
spokesman for the archbishop of Athens, told AFP.
The Church's governing Holy Synod has chosen a
special commission of three bishops to carry out
the investigation, a statement issued by the Church said.
