Russian Priest to Hold First North Pole Service, Interfax Says

      By Patrick Henry

April 4 (Bloomberg) -- A priest will lead the first-ever Russian
Orthodox church service at the North Pole on April 5, Interfax reported.

Following the service, led by the archbishop of Petropavlovsk and
Kamchatka, a wooden cross almost two meters tall and a Russian flag
will be erected on the site, the Russian news service said, citing
Alexander Terpugov, Moscow representative of the Petropavlovsk eparchy.

Archbishop Ignaty will also baptize a member of an Arctic expedition
organized by the Federal Security Service, the successor to the
Soviet-era KGB, Interfax said, citing Terpugov.

In 1998, a priest from Kamchatka led the first Orthodox service under
the Arctic ice aboard the ``Tomsk'' nuclear submarine, Interfax said.
