Cherkasy oblast authorities eager to relocate unused wooden church
      from Lviv oblast

Recently, mass media circulated false reports saying Cherkasy Mayor
Serhy Odarych wants to buy a church in the Lviv oblast. The mayor
rejected the reports as untrue. In fact, the idea to relocate an
ancient church from Halychyna to Cherkasy oblast was proposed by
Cherkasy oblast authorities, mayor's press service told ZIK Feb. 12.

"The mayor of Cherkasy Serhy Odarych has drawn a bead on an ancient
Ascension church in Pobuzhany, Busk rayon, Lviv oblast, and he wants
to buy it. Last Sunday members of the church community assembled to
discuss the fate of their church. They couldn't come to any
agreement," said the reports posted by several web publications.

Serhy Odarych waved off such allegations, saying the Ukrainian
Orthodox Church (with affiliation to Kyiv), not himself, was on the
look-out to buy a church in the Lviv oblast. UOC Cherkasy Archbishop
Ioann has confirmed that the church was in talks with one of the
villages in the Lviv oblast to relocate an ancient wooden church to
      the Cherkasy oblast.

"The idea belongs to the Cherkasy oblast administration as part of
its program to reeate historical landmarks in the area," Archbishop
Ioann says. Specifically, the oblast administration seeks to find a
17th century church, the period of the rule by Hetman Bondan
Khmelnytsky. Since the church in question belongs to the UOC, we are
involved in the talks. Note, we are not going to take away the church
from the congregation. This church has not been used in years, and
there is a new stone church nearby. The old church, meanwhile, is
gradually breaking down. In Cherkasy oblast it will be renovated and
saved. As stressed by the archbishop, it is important to reach an
agreement whereby the church will be donated, not sold for money.
