Orthodox Church seeks restoration of Trifon Pechenga monastery

      2007-12-28

The Russian Orthodox Church in Murmansk Oblast is seeking support for
the restoration of the Trifon Pechenga monastery. The full
reconstruction of the monastery and the adjacent buildings which
burned down in the fire 1 December will cost an estimated 20 million RUB.

The Trifon Pechenga monastery, which was founded in the early 16th
century, experienced total devastation in the fire which ignited
during a church service on December 1. The monastery was the
      northernmost in all of Russia.

Parts of the monastery building was from the 19th century.

The leader of the monastery, Father Daniil (Topoyev), now requests
all locals, as well as companies to help restore the monastery
building. The reconstruction sum for all of the burnt buildings is
estimated to 20 million RUB, Father Daniil says.
