BELGRADE -- Serbian government put over EUR 1mn every year in
restoration works at Hilandar monastery, a minister has said.

A government statement quoted culture minister Dragan Kojadinovic' as
saying that the outgoing cabinet set aside a total of EUR 4mn for the
      monastery during its mandate.

The Serbian Orthodox Church monastery located on Mount Athos, Greece,
was heavily damaged a fire in 2004.

Kojadinovic' expressed hope the next government "would continue this practice".

Estimates show that the complete renovation of the monastery will
cost EUR 25mn, with 15 mn to fund the reconstruction of facilities
damaged in the fire, the rest to be invested in infrastructure.

The 12th century monastery saw 5,671 out of the total of its 10,500
sq meters destroyed in the 2004 fire.
