      Ukraine: Catholic-Orthodox conflicts continue

Aug. 31 (CWNews.com) - Ukrainian Catholics in the Odessa are concerned that
the cathedral of the Holy Trinity is no longer identified as a Byzantine
Catholic cathedral, the RISU news service reports.

The cathedral was built by Ukrainian Catholics at the end of the 18th
century and dedicated in 1808; it has enjoyed financial support from
Ukrainian Catholics all around the world. But a plaque acknowledging the
Catholic contribution has been removed, and the cathedral itself is now
identified simply as "the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity," in place of the
previous name, "the Greek Cathedral of the Holy Trinity," recognizing the
      Byzantine presence.

RISU reports that conflict over the Odessa cathedral began when the
building was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Ukrainian Orthodox
Church of the Moscow patriarchate. Orthodox Metropolitan Ahafanhel has
shown little sympathy for the claims of Ukrainian Catholics who complain
that the building has been seized away from them.

In another sign of continuing conflict between the Ukrainian Catholic and
Orthodox communities, a Catholic parish in Kontsovo had transferred their
allegiance to the Orthodox Church. The Ukrainian Catholic eparchy of
Mukachevo announced that the Cathoilc parish was intact, and "none of its
faithful went over to the Orthodox Church." Catholic commentators observed
pointedly that the false story appeared to serve the interests of the
      Moscow patriarchate.
