São Paulo - Pope Shenouda III of Alexandria is arriving in Brazil today (10) to consecrate the first and only Coptic Orthodox Church in the country, located in the Jabaquara neighbourhood in São Paulo. He will be accompanied by a committee of 16 people, among them Egyptian bishops and priests. The group will be met by Arab ambassadors and by priest Aghason Anba Paul, who is responsible for the church in São Paulo.
Before coming to São Paulo, Shenouda visited South Africa on Sunday, and after the consecration of the church he will travel to Bolivia. On Saturday morning, Aghason intends to take the Coptic patriarch around São Paulo.
"I would like to take him to Ipiranga museum, as it is a historic marker for Brazil," stated Aghason. In the afternoon, Pope Shenouda will participate in a luncheon organized by the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce, and then he will give a press conference at the Maksoud Plaza hotel.
To Aghason, the presence of Pope Shenouda "is a very great blessing". According to him, these trips take place to bring the patriarch closer to the faithful around the world.
The consecration mass at the Coptic Orthodox Church, which was completed in September 2001, will take place at 08:30 am on Sunday (12). Among those to accompany the service will be cardinal Cláudio Hummes, archbishop of São Paulo. The service will be open to the public.
      Line of Saint Mark
Pope Shenouda, aged 82, was born in Assiut, in southern Egypt, and his birth name is Nazeer Gayed. With over 120 religious books written, Shenouda was the first Coptic Pope to visit the Vatican, in 1973, when he was met by Pope Paul VI. In 2000, Pope John Paul II repaid the visit while travelling to Egypt.
The Coptic Church congregates the vast majority of Egyptian Christians and, according to tradition, the Church began with St. Mark in the first century of the Christian era. Shenouda has been ahead of the Coptic Church for 34 years and is the 117th Pope. According to Aghason, talks by Pope Shenouda, which take place every Wednesday at the Cathedral in Cairo, bring together around 5,000 people.
According to Aghason, among the Coptic beliefs that are different from those of the Catholic Church are that the Coptics, for example, do not believe in the existence of Purgatory and there are also differences regarding the nature of Christ and the Holy Spirit. The term "Coptic" comes from the Arabic word "qbit", which means Egyptian. The Coptics believe they descend from the ancient Egyptians.
Aghason, who was also born in Egypt, came to Brazil in 1993 with the mission of establishing a Coptic Church.
