Washington, D.C. (2/1/06)Twenty-one Coptic Orthodox Christians were
killed and twenty-three Copts injured in a fatal tour bus crash on January
31, 2006 in Upper Egypt. The bus, which carried the tour group from the
Virgin Mary Church in Shubra al-Kheema to various monasteries
throughout Upper Egypt, swerved to avoid a truck and fell into a nearby
      canal.

Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram reports the incident occurred near the
governorate of al-Qina, where a Copt was recently appointed the only current
      Coptic governor in Egpyt.

Rescuers recovered twenty-one bodies and twenty-three injured
survivors from the water. The injured were transported to hospitals in Luxor
and Issna. A female child is reported missing.

Some observers have suggested a second vehicle sped up behind the
bus, forcing the bus driver to swerve.
