Chandy urged to come clean on Piravom incident

      It was not planned: Metropolitan

KOCHI: A meeting of the functionaries of the Jacobite faction of the
Malankara Church has called upon Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to come
clean on the incident on Thursday in which Thomas Athanasios,
Orthodox Metropolitan of the Kandanad East Diocese, tried to make his
way to the St. Mary's Church, Piravom.

Jacobite Syrian Church spokesman Varghese Kallappara said here on
Friday that the Metropolitan was accompanied by a prominent Congress
leader in Piravom, known to be close to the Chief Minister, when he
tried to enter the church. This was an indication that the attempt
was a planned one and was yet another instance of the Orthodox group
trying to create trouble with the knowledge of the Chief Minister, he
      alleged.

Metropolitan Thomas Athanasios told The Hindu that the attempt to
enter the church was not a planned one and that it was just a step to
draw the attention of the State authorities who appeared incapable of
imposing the rule of law or to prevent the Jacobite hierarchy from
      entering the church.

The Metropolitansaid a meeting is likely to be held within a day or
two on the Piravom incident and on the larger issue of churches that
      remain closed.
