The Monastic Communities and parishioners of New Skete Monastery in
Cambridge, New York, invite you to join them for a day of prayer and
reflection on their feast day-the Feast of the Transfiguration, August 6,
2005 (rain or shine). The theme of the pilgrimage is Monastic Life,
Transfiguration, and the Spirit of Happiness. As is the rule of monastic
life, the day will begin and end with prayer-Matins at 9:00 am, followed by
the celebration of the Divine Liturgy at 10 am, and Vespers and Vigil at
5:00 pm. Two main presentations will be held in the afternoon-Monastic
Life and the Spirit of Happiness by Brother Christopher and a panel
discussion on the Role of Monasteries in the General Life of the Church
including Fr. Michael Plekon, Teva Regule, and members of the monastic
communities. In addition, the day will include tours of the monastery
Churches, a tour of the nuns' bakery, demonstration of the monks' dog
program, as well as time for reflection and quiet. Traditional ethnic and
American style food will be available for purchase.

The Monastic communities of New Skete understand the monastic life as a
living expression of the faith, a calling to theosis-a life of true
      happiness shared with the Divine.

Monastic traditionÂ…knows that whether we are monks or not, each of us is
called to happiness-true happiness-the sort that stands up to the
tempestuous nature of everyday life. This kind of happiness comes only
through the integrity and maturity that result from sustained spiritual
effortÂ….And though the particular spiritual path each of us follows will
vary according to the context in which we live, nevertheless, they are all
      pointed in the same direction.
(Monks of New Skete, In the Spirit of Happiness, pp. 28-29.)
