UGCC Patriarch Cardinal Lubomir Gusar asks US authorities to protect the rights of Russia's Ukrainian Greek Catholics

During his visit to Washington at the beginning of April, the Patriarch of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Cardinal Lubomir Gusar, had a number of meetings to discuss the freedom of worship for Russia's Greek Catholics.

According to the Ukrainian national information service, when meeting with senior US State Department representatives, the Patriarch expressed concern that the faithful children of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Russia are deprived of having their own temples and of professing the faith according the religious traditions of their ancestors. The cardinal noted that after many decades of persecution it is difficult to be precise about the number of Ukrainian Greek Catholics in Russia. At the same time, he complained that numerous attempts to send Greek Catholic priests to Russia were met with resistance from the side of the ROC/MP. According to the head of the UGCC, federal governmental authorities interfere with registering UGCC communities in Russia, sometimes even contrary to court decisions. Patriarch Lubomir Gusar called on the Russian government not to prevent its citizens from professing the faith which they consider their own and from praying according to their own
      rites.

State Department representatives, from their part, reported that Protestant preachers from the USA face similar problems in Russia and they promised to raise the subject of the rights of Greek Catholics on the agenda of US-Russian negotiations.
