Orthodox (UOC-MP) Metropolitan to Participate in 2nd CIS Interreligious Forum

03.02.04 (RISU.org.ua) – Metropolitan Volodymyr (Sabodan), head of the
Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP), will participate in
the 2nd Interreligious Peacekeeping Forum of the Commonwealth of
Independent States (CIS). The forum, initiated by Patriarch Alexis II of
Moscow and Sheikh Pasha-zade, head of the Administration of Muslims in the
Caucasus and the Interreligious Council of Russia, will be held from 2 to 4
      March in Moscow.

The aim of the forum is to coordinate the activities of traditional
religious organizations in the CIS countries in order to strengthen the
international and interreligious world, consolidate traditional spiritual
values in society and be prepared to face common challenges, in particular
      terrorism.

It is planned that after the forum an interreligious council of CIS
countries will be established, gathering more than 20 spiritual leaders.
They will represent all the CIS countries and 5 main religions, including
Orthodoxy, the Armenian Apostolic Church, Islam, Judaism and Buddhism.

The forum does not intend to bring closer the religious teachings and
doctrines of various religions and does not entail joint prayers or
services. Neither will theological issues be discussed. Its main objective
is to continue the traditions of the 1st Interreligious Peacekeeping Forum,
which was held in Moscow on 13 and 14 November 2000.

Among those who are expected to participate at the forum are Patriarch
Alexis II of the Russian Orthodox Church, Catholicos Ilia II, patriarch of
all Georgia, Patriarch Karekin II, the catholicos of all Armenians of the
Apostolic Church, and Sheikh Pasha-zade, head of the Administration of
Muslims in the Caucasus. In addition, other hierarchs from all across the
CIS are expected to participate in the forum.
