CHURCH OF PRINCE ALEXIS TO BE BUILT IN KAMCHATKA
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, February 29, 2004 (RIA Novosti correspondent Oskana Guseva) - A ceremony of consecrating a site for the construction of a church of Prince Alexis will take place on Sunday in Petropavlovsk-Komchatsky (administrative center of the eponymous region in the northeast of Asian Russia).
According to the local eparchy's press service, a cross will be placed in a park on Leninskaya Street, while construction will be launched on Monday.
Prince Alexis, son of the last Russian Tsar Nicholas II, was a patron of Kamchatka's Orthodox monastery headed by Archbishop Nestor. In the early 20th century, the monastery engaged in charity activities, helping build schools, hospitals and orphanages.
Prince Alexis was executed by Bolsheviks in Sverdlovsk (now renamed back to Yekaterinburg in honor of Empress Catherine the Great) along with the emperor, empress and five sisters of his. The Russian Orthodox Church has canonized all members of the tsar's family.
