4th Session of ROC/MP and ROCOR Commissions
4th Working Session of the ROC/MP and ROCOR Commissions
The fourth working meeting of the Moscow Patriarchate's commission on dialogue with ROCOR's commission on dialogue with the Moscow Patriarchate took place March 2 through March 4, 2005 on the outskirts of Paris. Accompanied by joint prayers, the sessions proceeded in an atmosphere of brotherly love, frank discussions and a mutual tendency to overcome divisions, reported the communications service of the MP/Department of External Church Relations.
Meeting participants from the Moscow Patriarchate were: Archbishop Innokenty of Korsun, commission chairman; Archbishop Evgeny of Vereisk, archpriest Vladislav Tsypin, archimandrite Tikhon (Shevkunov), archpriest Nikolai Balashov, commission secretary. ROCOR(L) participants: Archbishop Mark of Berlin and Germany, commission chairman; Bishop Amvrossy of Vevey; archimandrite Luka (Murianka); archpriest Alexander Lebedev, commission secretary; and archpriest Nikolai Artyomov.
Work continued on preparing documents representing the general vision on matters relating to the tragic destiny of the Russian Church in the XX century, relations of Church and state, canonical status of ROCOR(L) as a self-governing part of the Local Orthodox Church of Russia, canonical conditions on restoring full relations.
At the beginning of the commissions' joint work, a decision was adopted to publish the commissions' documents, approved by the church authorities of the Moscow Patriarchate and the ROCOR(L), at the completion of the process of negotiations. However, because of pastoral concerns, it was deemed useful to publish beforehand the materials already agreed upon. Members of the commissions believe that the documents developed at the present session can be published after their approval by the Holy Synod of the Moscow Patriarchate and the Bishops' Synod of the ROCOR. It is anticipated to simultaneously publish commission documents prepared earlier and already approved by MP and ROCOR(L) authorities.
Other matters connected with advancing the process of restoring unity were also discussed.
The next joint session of the commissions is planned for the summer of 2005.
