      DAMASCUS, March 2 (RIA Novosti, Margarita Kislova) - The Jordanian capital,
      Amman, is hosting the international conference Prospects of the
      Christian-Moslem Dialogue in Today's World, that was initiated by the
      Orthodox Peoples' Unity Fund and Jordan's Orthodox Society.

      Participants in the conference are going to discuss issues relevant to the
      whole world in the context of the spiritual experience of Orthodox
      Christianity and Islam.

      The principal goals of the world's major religions are the promotion of the
      dialogue among various faiths, return to spiritual values and condemnation
      of violence, participants emphasized.

      Today, with the loss of moral values becoming high on the agenda, opinion of
      authoritative Orthodox Christian and Islamic leaders becomes very important,
      Sheikh Izetdin al-Tamimi, the Jordanian king's councilor on religious
      matters, said during the opening ceremony.

      Sergei Popov, chairman of the State Duma's [the lower house of Russian
      parliament] Committee for Public Associations and Religious Organizations,
      said that international efforts should be pooled to increase the prestige of
      moral values.

      "All major religions denounce terrorism and violence. The recent
      developments all over the world have proven this. However, international
      efforts should be pooled to bolster the role played by the imperishable
      spiritual values," Mr. Popov said.

      The president of the Orthodox Peoples' Unity Fund, Valery Alexeyev,
      highlighted the efforts being made by Middle East Orthodox organizations to
      maintain and strengthen piece in the region and rally the Orthodox Arabs
      around the idea of piece, tolerance and equality of the followers of
      Christianity and Islam.

      Mr. Alexeyev thanked King Abdallah II of Jordan for the care about the
      Christian sacred places on Jordanian soil.

      Political, public and religious figures from Russia, Eastern Europe, the
      Balkans, Central Asia and the Middle East are taking part in the conference
      held under the auspices of King Abdallah II.
