ATHENS. The Greek church news agency "Romfeya" reported that the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Greece is putting into effect its decision of a few years ago forbidding clergy to carry and use weapons, including participation in in hunting.

This question was first raised in 2006 after a hunting accident; the culprit who was a priest. However, because of numerous protests by clerics who are hunters, this decision was not put into practice.

But after another hunting accident, the Holy Synod returned to this issue. The members of the Synod are clarifying that the ban on the wearing and using weapons will prevent deposition/removal from the priesthood  because of manslaughter while hunting. Thus, from this year forward hunting societies are obliged to deny clerics a license to hunt.
