Varna diocese refused to accept temporary administrator appointed by the Synod of the Bulgarian Church

Metropolitan Kalinnik had been appointed temporary administrator of the Diocese of Vratsa

VARNA. After the death of Metropolitan Kirill of Varna priests of the widowed diocese refused to accept the interim administrator appointed by the Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, according to the Bulgarian edition of the "Standard".

Just a few hours after the burial of Metropolitan Kirill of Varna in his diocese there was a scandal: the clergy refused to transmit to Metropolitan Kallinik the affairs of the case to Metropoli (office and personal account at the direction of Metropolitan Kirill Patriarch Neofit were sealed after the news of his death).

Archpiest Doncho Alechandrov, the official representative of the diocese of Varna read the petition to the diocesan clergy to the Synod and the Patriarch, expressing hope for the wisdom of the synod hierarchs and the wish that either Metropolitan Ambrose of Sistrina or Metropolitan Gabriel of Lovech  would be appointed interim administrator.

As related by Fr. Doncho, diocesan priests wrote this petition after speaking with  Metropolitan Kalinnik  after the funeral in the office building the Metropolia. At the start of the conversation Vladyka Kalinnik  had hoped to overcome the situation, but then retreated -- angry, left. But, according to the priests, his departure does not mean the rejection of the Synod's order.

The election of Metropolitan Kalinnik as the administrator of Varna diocese raised eyebrows among the Bulgarian clergy and the faithful, as the Bulgarian Orthodox Church usually appointed as administrators to the widowed dioceses bishops of neighboring dioceses --  so that when organizing the election of the new metropolitan the interim administrator would  not have to make long journeys. In this case, the administrator of the eastern diocese of Varna was the hierarch located at the opposite end of Bulgaria. However, as reported by Bulgarian media, relations between the deceased and the Metropolitan Kalinnik had always been very strained.

Also, Bulgarian media reported that the Metropolitan Kalinnik himself proposed to the Synod his candidacy for administrator of the Varna diocese, and all the hierarchs of the Synod unanimously voted for him .
