Ukrainian Ministers Discuss with Patriarch Kirill Preparation of
Celebration of 1025th Rus Baptism Anniversary
      29 March 2013

The first session of the joint church and public organizing committee of
the Moscow Patriarchate on the preparation and organization of the
celebration of the 1025th anniversary of the baptism of Rus was held on
March 27 in Moscow with the participation of delegations of Russia,
      Ukraine and Belarus, Religion.in.ua
<http://www.religion.in.ua/> reported with reference to Patriarchia.ru
      <http://www.patriarchia.ru/>.

Ukraine was represented at the meeting by Administrator of the Ukrainian
Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) Metropolitan Antonii of
Boryspil, Metropolitan Pavel of Vyshhorod and Chornobyl, Vice Prime
Minister of Ukraine Hryshchenko, head of the Association of Ukraine's
Cities Y. Vilkul, Deputy Mayor of Kyiv Hereha.

The meeting was headed by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow. He said in his
address that the main result of the celebration of the anniversary
should be "to help people sense the breath of history, spiritual
kinship, find their free, original way into the future" of the peoples
      of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.

According to Patriarch Kirill, without this triune kinship, "which has
formed our unique civilization," the peoples of the mentioned countries
"betray themselves" and "cannot be happy."

According to the report, the aspirations of Patriarch Kirill to stress
the kinship and identity of the tree nations are provoked, in
particular, by Ukraine's seeking of European integration, attempts to
leave the sphere of influence of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church.
The Ukrainian Orthodox Church also shows some tendencies of
strengthening self-rule. In addition, the affiliation of the canonical
territory of Ukraine to Moscow is denied by the Constantinople
Patriarchate which actively monitors the situation in Ukraine to
      overcome the church divide.
