Treasurer of Serbian Orthodox Church caught in large embezzlement
The Chief Treasurer of the Belgrade-Karlovac Archdiocese Serbian Orthodox Church stole church money during the last several years, stealing more than a million euros.
BELGRADE, February 8 - RIA Novosti, Nikolai Sokolov. The Chief Treasurer of Belgrade-Karlovac Archdiocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) in the past few years embezzled church money; the police is investigating the case reports the press service of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
The Belgrade-Karlovac Archdiocese with its center in Belgrade, is the richest of the dioceses of the Serbian Orthodox Church; it is headed by the head of the Serbian Church, Patriarch Irenaeus. The theft was committed by a civilian.
According to the Belgrade newspaper "Blitz", earlier this week a suspect was detained by police.
He stole the equivalent of more than a million euros, that is 19 million dinars (about 170,000 euros), 40,000 CHF, USD 50 thousand and 890 thousand euros from the Church's treasury. Theft has become possible because of poor control of the treasury, which should be tested once a year to by an independent church commission -- and in the period between inspections, according to newspaper, the treasurer can independently perform various financial transactions. Moreover, it is assumed that much of the money was stolen during a long illness preceding head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Pavle, when the needed surveillance of the church treasury was lacking.
