Request of former Metropolitan of Attica to be restored to episcopate denied
The Synod of the Church of Greece denied the request of the former Metropolitan of Attica to restore him to the episcopate
ATHENS. As reported by "Amen", the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Greece at its meeting of July 5, 2012 gave a negative response to former Metropolitan Panteleimon (Bezinitis) of Attica who had requested a change in the punishment given him - relegation to being a monk and deprivation of his Cathedra; he would then have the right to conduct services as a retired bishop.
In 2005, Metropolitan Panteleimon was removed from administering the diocese in connection with allegations of corruption and immoral behavior. In 2006 the court sentenced him to 8 years of imprisonment for misappropriating large sums of money. In May of 2009, Metropolitan Panteleimon was deposed.
