Seminar Held in Kharkiv on Spiritual Education of Convicts

      08.09.04 (RISU.org.ua) – Kharkiv —An all-Ukrainian seminar of Ukraine’s
State Department on Penal Matters and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow
      Patriarchate (UOC-MP) was held on 4 August 2004 in Temniv Work-farm #100
situated in the village of Vasyvyshche near Kharkiv. Current issues
regarding the spiritual education of prisoners were considered at the seminar.

The work of the seminar was led by General-Lieutenant Mykola Liovochkin,
head of the State Department on Penal Matters, and the UOC-MP Archbishop of
Lviv and Halych Auhustyn (Markevych), head of the UOC-MP Department on
Cooperation with the Ministry of Defense and Other Military Bodies in Ukraine.

Kharkiv region takes the first place today in Ukraine in spiritual
educational in the prison system. Three churches, three chapels, and five
prayer rooms operate in correctional institutions of the region, and
another church is being finished in a women’s prison. They all are under
the jurisdiction of the UOC-MP, even though spiritual care for prisoners is
      provided by 13 confessions.

In the first half of this year, 229 services, 78 baptisms and 6 marriages
were administered in these churches. Participants of the seminar recognized
that the friendly atmosphere in many correctional institutions of the
Kharkiv region has been set thanks to the clergy of the UOC-MP. Therefore,
it was decided to use this experience all over Ukraine. Also, a memorandum
for prisoners, which sets out their legal status, was presented at the seminar.
