Leaders of the Orthodox, Catholic and Anglican churches in Egypt met
on Sunday to discuss possible security measures to be taken in and
around Christian places of worship in light of recent al-Qaeda threats
against Egyptian churches.
They also reportedly discussed the possible reinstatement of Egypt's
Coptic Church in the Middle East Council of Churches.
“[Coptic] Pope Shenouda doesn’t want the Coptic Church to return to
the council,” said Anglican Church leader Safwat al-Bayad.
According to al-Bayad, the meeting also tackled the issue of sectarian
tension in Egypt.
“Every week after Friday prayers, demonstrations are held by Muslims
to incite sectarian strife,” he claimed.
