St. George Orthodox Church Assembling Health Kits for Haiti

      FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

      [PHARR] In response to the massive earthquake and resulting horrific
      human suffering in Haiti, St. George Orthodox Church in Pharr is collecting
      health and personal hygiene kit items to be shared in Haiti through the
      International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) and their partner agencies,
      such as Church World Service.

      If you would like to contribute towards this effort, please make
      arrangements to bring donated items to St. George's at 704 W. Sam Houston in Pharr
      by calling 956-781-2388. Each health and hygiene kit includes: Packed in a
      gallon-sized plastic bag with zip-lock closures, one hand towel, one
      washcloth, one comb, one metal nail file or nail clipper, one bar of new and
      wrapped bath soap, one toothbrush (NO toothpaste) and six Band-Aids. If any
      would like to contribute items, help assemble health kits, or make financial
      contributions towards the purchase of these items, please contact Fr.
      Antonio Perdomo, Pastor of St. George's at the phone number listed above.

      Donated items will be sorted and bagged for distribution at St. George's on
      Saturday, January 23 at 10 AM, Boxes of health kits will be immediately
      shipped to the IOCC and Church World Services for prompt distribution. If
      any would like to donate or help assemble health kits, please join others at
      St. George Orthodox Church at 704 West Sam Houston next Saturday at 10 AM.

      In addition, Father Antonio Perdomo, Pastor of St. George Orthodox Church,
      is part of the IOCC's ongoing Emergency Response Network. He helped the
      IOCC with relief efforts in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina and formerly
      worked with FEMA after forest fires in New Mexico. Father Perdomo is the
      director of St. George Food Pantry in Pharr which regularly serves over 150 area
      families. Perdomo is a native of the Dominican Republic and has visited
      mission churches in both the Dominican Republic and Haiti a number of times
      throughout the years. With the blessing of Metropolitan Jonah of the
      Orthodox Church in America, the locum tenens Bishop of the Diocese of the South,
      Father Perdomo preparing for deployment to Haiti as soon as the IOCC is
      ready for on-site ground support staff.
