SHOSTKA (SUMY REGION))During the night of 1 July, 2009, a Cossack Church of the Holy Protection of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyivan Patriarchate (UOC-KP), in the town of Shostka of the Sumy region, burned down in an arson attack. The church was consecrated in 2006 by Patriarch Filaret of UOC-KP.
"Later, a church of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Moscow Patriarchate was built in front of it. From the pulpit propaganda and repeated threats and instigations against the UOC-Kyiv Patriarchate were heard," says a report of the press service of the Sumy Eparchy of UOC-KP.
According to the report, there were two previous arson attempts on the church. And after this third attempt, the fire burned the church down almost to the ground.
A special committee of the Ministry of Emergency Situations is currently investigating the causes of the fire. According to the report, witnesses testify that the roof was broken in order to get into the church and an inflammable liquid was poured on the altar wall.
