Bulgaria's Orthodox Church celebrates Quadragesima Sunday

Bulgarians celebrated on Sunday "Sirni Zagovezni" of Quadragesima
Sunday, an Orthodox Christian holiday, which takes place seven weeks
before Easter, and marks the beginning of the longest fast. Bulgarian
tradition has it that on this day people beg each other forgiveness
for their wrongdoings during the year.
On t his day Bulgarians place on their table cheese pastry, a round
loaf of bread, boiled eggs, white candy with nuts in it /called
      Halva/ and fish.
In the past a ritual was performed in the evening when the entire
family is gathered. A piece of halva was tied on a long string,
hanging from the ceiling (at some places it was replaced by a
hard-boiled egg). The thread is swayed around in a circle and the
people round the table keep on trying to catch the lump in their mouth.
