Vladimir, Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine: It's not time to speak about any kind of autocephaly

      Kiev. February 3, 2009

Believers are not ready for autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church believes its leader, Metropolitan Vladimir.

"Today is no time speak about any kind of autocephaly and today it will benefit noone," - Interfax quoted the hierarch.

Metropolitan Vladimir said that believers are not perceiving this possibility very actively or positively. "People are afraid that structural changes in the Church might be harmful" - said the bishop.

The hierarch also recalled that at the last Local Council in Moscow, the Russian Church's Statute was approved taking into consideration amendments being made to it in various years by Bishops' Councils.

According to this Statute, "the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is self-governing with the rights of broad autonomy", and is guided by the 1990 Tomos from the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and by its own Statute.
