Presentation of Priest Dimitry Safonov's book "Bp. Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and His Time"

The presentation was held within the framework of  XXII International Christmas Educational Readings at the Moscow Theological Academy.I

Sergiev Posad. Jan. 28 in the small hall of the Moscow Theological Academy under the XXII International Christmas Educational Readings book presented Rev. Dimitry Safonov "Bp. Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and His Time."

The book's author is the priest Dimitry Safonov, Candidate of Theology, Ph.D., professor of MDA, spoke of the book's history, content, historical sources and some aspects of the life of Bp. Tikhon.

Scientific reviewer of the book,  Archpriest Vladislav Tsipin praised its historical and scientific value, saying that for a long time is one of the most complete and high-quality papers on this topic.

In priest Dmitry Safonov 's book, "Bp. Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and His Time" for the first time brought together and presented in chronological order, the details of each day episcopal ministry of the Holy Patriarch Tikhon, since his election to the Patriarchal throne,  until his last day of life .

The author restored the chronology of the patriarchal ministry of Bp. Tikhon, drawing on a wide range of sources, including archival documents (unpublished before or previously published in various publications), the memoirs of contemporaries - co-workers and fellow ministers of the Patriarch of Moscow, parishioners of Moscow churches, and even GPU employees who guarded the most Holy Patriarch during his imprisonment in the Donskoy Monastery. Also in chronological order -- details of Patriarch Tikhon's divine services in various churches of Moscow and Moscow region and episcopal ordinations, which took place during these services.

Bp. Tikhon's activity and those of the  Patriarchal Holy Synod are considered parallelling the background activity of the Cheka-OGPU-NKVD Anti-Religious Commission (ARC) and other structures of the Soviet authorities, aimed at the destruction and the complete destruction of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The book also uses the recently declassified policy and business documents of Cheka-OGPU-NKVD characterizing the extent of repressions, implemented at the hands of the KGB against the clergy and laity, and reveals the working methods of the Cheka among the "clergy (those nearby the church)."

The final chapter -- on the basis of archival materials and contemporary memoirs --exhaustively considers the last days of Bp. Tikhon, his death, burial and confirmation of Metropolitan Pyotr (Polyansky) as Locum Tenens of the Patriarchal throne  The book provides comments, unique illustrations and a name index.

Thus, the reader of the book "Bp. Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and His Time" has a unique opportunity to get a complete and comprehensive picture of the time and the conditions under which His Holiness Patriarch Tikhon carried out his primatial ministry, and the greatness of his achievement through which Russian Orthodox Church was preserved in that difficult period.
