Mother Ines of Guatemala
Mother Ines was born in 1951 into a happy family of six children
in Guatemala. She attended a Roman Catholic nun's school. For some
years she studied architec- ture both in Guatemala and in
In 1971, Mother Ines joined the Roman Catholic nuns in Gua-
temala. Mother has a degree in theology: her studies took her to
Mexico, Paris, Belgium, El Salvador, the Philippines, Jerusalem as
well as at home in Guatemala. Those years of study brought Mother
to the Orthodox faith.
On April 30, 1986, Mother Ines left the Roman Catholic
congregation to found an Orthodox mona-stery in Gua- temala. She
was received by His Emi-nence Archbishop Antonio of the Antiochian
Church, tonsured and installed as the Igumeni (Abbess) of the
Orthodox Monastery of the Holy Trinity.
Mother Ines devotes her life to the care of her Orphan- age which
has regular volunteers from North America helping out in different
ways. Building a large cathedral, a new building for the orphanage
and looking after the daily needs of the monastery are all
enterprises and responsibili- ties that Mother Ines administers
with joy, creativity, love and a lot of energy!
In 2013 Saint Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary bestowed
an Honorary Doctoral Degree to Mother Ines. The growth of the
Orthodox Church in Guatemala is at its beginning stage, it will
continue its growth according to the will of God and for His
glory. Please visit the website which describes what this work has
been and what has been accomplished over the years.
