Statement by Melanie Jula Sakoda
We are grateful that Bishop Matthias Moriak has addressed the rumors about him that have been swirling in Orthodox circles. The bishop of Chicago and the Midwest confirmed yesterday that he has been placed on a paid leave of absence while he is investigated by the Orthodox Church in America (OCA) for "inappropriate" behavior with a woman.
While we are grateful that the OCA appears to be handling the matter in accord with their sexual abuse policy, the group still appears reluctant to be transparent and open about such allegations. To date, no information about the charges or the investigation has appeared on the website of the OCA. The Church should be using every outlet available to them to publicize the allegations and to ask those with information to come forward.
Let's hope that every person who can shed light on these allegations will find the courage and strength to speak up so that the truth can be known. If anyone has been the victim of a crime, or witnessed or suspected criminal behavior, they should report to the police before going to church authorities.
