Have you thought about taking on a more active role in Friends of Lafitte Corridor? Now is a great time to get involved. Over the last two years, FOLC has worked to advocate for creation of the Greenway and to initiate projects that multiply the Greenway's potential benefits in the following areas:

      Public Health and Recreation

FOLC helped the Prevention Research Center at Tulane's School of Public Health launch a long-term study of the greenway's impact on public health and physical activity

FOLC is partnering with the Rails to Trails Conservancy and The Urban Conservancy to conduct an extensive outreach campaign and ensure that neighborhoods and stakeholders along the Greenway Corridor are brought into the planning process

      Economic Development

FOLC succeeded in getting the entire Greenway Corridor incorporated within the State of Louisiana's Cultural Districts program. This status establishes tax credits for original works of art produced within the Cultural District, and offers tax credits for rehabilitation of historic structures.

      Sustainability and environmental quality

FOLC won a grant from the Greater New Orleans Foundation to support development of sustainable stormwater management design concepts that may be integrated into planning and design of the Greenway

FOLC won an Urban Forestry grant from the State to fund a survey of the existing tree canopy within the Greenway Corridor.

The City of New Orleans has allocated over 3 million dollars to the project and has recently executed a contract for planning and design of the greenway. The next phase of the Lafitte Corridor greenway & revitalization project will begin in the near future.

We need your energy and input so that FOLC can remain an effective community advocate during this crucial phase. If you're interested in becoming more involved or just learning more about FOLC and the Lafitte Corridor, please come to a "Meet the FOLCsters" information session on Thursday, December 17th at 6:30 PM at Grace Episcopal Church (3700 Canal Street).

      Hope to see you there!
