Traffic was halted to a standstill this afternoon, between 1:30 and 2:00,
while a bunch of lucky holiday birders watched an immature Golden Eagle
demolish an American Coot on top of a telephone pole between the Irvine
Water District plant and dry pond E at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in
Irvine. The eagle stopped eating occasionally to keep an eye on all the
activity below but did not leave his post until all edible parts of the coot
had been consumed. He then flew off, eastward, toward the golf course. What
a great way to start the new year!!
