      Group,
There is a first-of-its-kind event that Sea and Sage is hosting at the
end of this month that you should be aware of. On Sat. and Sun., Oct.
27th & 28th, from 8 to 3 pm, at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in
Irvine, a number of booths (and demonstrators) will be available
showing the latest in birding optics. If you want to see and compare
the latest in optical technology (Bausch & Lomb, Bogen, Brunton, Eagle
Optics, Leica, Meade, Opticron, Optolyth, Pentax, Scope City,
Swarovski, Swift, Zeiss) this is your chance. There will probably
also be information on spotting scopes as well. THERE IS NO CHARGE
for attending the Optics Field Days. You can always bird San Joaquin
as well that day. There are catered sack lunches available for both
days ($6.50 for sandwich, dessert and soda) but you probably need to
reserve one of those. In addition, there are a number of workshops
that do have fees with some of that $$$ going to Sea and Sage.
Saturday Workshops include: artist John Schmitt for 2 hours on field
sketching, author Ned Harris for an hour on Raptors in Flight, Better
View Desired's Stephen Ingraham on a Review of Optics and Birding
Accessories, photographer Clay Taylor on Spotting Scope Photography,
and myself on Testing Birding Optics. Sunday Workshops include: Clay
Taylor on Spotting Scope Photography, myself on Repairing and
adjusting binoculars (cheap ones!!!, like Bushnell Porro Prisms), John
Schmitt on field sketching, Ned Harris on Raptors in Flight, author
and all around expert Kimball Garrett on mistaken identifications, and
author and expert birder Jon Dunn on Shorebirds. The people coming in
to give the workshops are top notch and for the most part, nationally
known. There is more information on the Sea and Sage website at
      http://www.seaandsageaudubon.org/optics.htm
or call Audubon House at 949-261-7963. Remember, the general event is
open free to the public, it's only the workshops you need to reserve a
place (as space is limited)and pay a fee. Call Audubon House at 949
      261-7963 for more information.

      See you there...
