OPCTJ had a booth at Day in Our village (shared with Move To Amend). We collected 298 signed postcards supporting a living wage. Tom Broderick will deliver these to the Village Board.
In collaboration with other groups, OPCTJ has spearheaded a campaign over the past several years to have the Village Board pass an ordinance calling for a living wage (which we identify as at least $15/hour) to be paid to these catrgories of workers: (1) Village employees, (2) employees of contractors and
subcontractors hired by the Village to perform work for the Village, and (3)
employees of businesses and organizations in Oak Park that annually receive $50,000 or
more in financial contribution from the Village.
We are asking that the board place this proposal, passed by the Community Relations Commission by a 7-2 vote in 2010, on the board's agenda and vote in favor of it.
If you want to learn more about the living wage campaign or obtain a poster supporting it, contact Tom Broderick, 708-386-1371.
We thank the following people for staffing the booth: Ron Baiman, Bill Barclay, Tom Broderick, Ruth Kovacs, Rich Pokorny, Fran Sampson, Ted Sowinski, Peg Strobel, Beverley Walter.
