The League of Women Voters of Oak Park and River Forest and the Oak Park Public Library will sponsor an informative forum concerning the Patriot Act on Tuesday, October 14th, from 7:15 to 9 p.m., Veteran’s Room at the main branch of the Oak Park Public Library, 834 Lake Street.

Speakers will include Patrick Fitzgerald, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois and Harvey Grossman, Legal Director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois. Following their presentations, Jim Madigan, Assistant Director of the Oak Park Public Library, will briefly present the Library’s response to the requirements of the Patriot Act.

The Forum will be moderated by League member, Val Peiler. Written questions will be taken from the audience.

The Patriot Act expanded government surveillance capabilities, strengthened criminal penalties for terrorists and removed legal barriers that prevented intelligence agencies, criminal investigators and prosecutors from sharing information.

The League of WomenVoters, a non-partisan political organization, encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
